about

"On her third solo album, ‘sexual intellectual’ Vanessa Daou tackles the elements—the Periodic Table kind, that is—by using plutonium (the radioactive substance that fuels everything from nuclear power to stars) as a metaphor for things toxic but beautiful, alien but familiar. This dichotomy, Daou suggests, can be found in everything: relationships, nature, outer space, time, computers, even ourselves. As usual, producer/husband Peter Daou dreams up a floaty, electro-jazz landscape for Vanessa's otherworldly voice—she confides rather than sings, like a lover whispering dirty secrets into your ear."
— HX Magazine

Vanessa Daou looks towards the stars – and the future – on her third solo album ‘Plutonium Glow'.

The album marked a significant turning point for the enigmatic groove poet. It would be Daou’s first independently-released work (after parting ways with Krasnow Entertainment/MCA). This not only freed her from the entanglements (and limitations) of the traditional record industry model, it also gave her full artistic control and ownership of her creative output. Most importantly, this allowed Vanessa to remain on the cutting-edge of the emerging technological innovations, which would become the new digital age of the internet (social media, digital content, streaming, etc.) giving artists direct access to fans worldwide.

'Plutonium Glow' showcases Vanessa and her musical partner/producer (and then-husband) Peter Daou further exploring their adventurous musical hybrid blending sensual often enlightening words with sophisticated club-rooted electronic beats sprinkled with elements of jazz, funk, soul and ambient-pop.

Where her previous offerings – 1994’s ‘Zipless’ and 1996’s ‘Slow To Burn’ - were more focused on matters of this earth, particularly corporeal matters such as pleasure, desire and yearning. ‘Plutonium Glow’ is a much more metaphysically-minded investigation inspired by navigations in cyberspace, used as a cogent metaphor for both the future and inner/outer space.

Daou’s wispy, feather-like vocals float off into the crisp night air, leaving listeners with a sweet but sometimes sorrowful aftertaste. They seem to be reverberating from some deep, dark place and, like her first two albums, convey an almost zealous, sacred sense of passion mirrored by the striking, contrasting imagery in her visceral, poetic and philosophical lyrics. They’re the perfect bedfellows for Peter’s spacious arrangements that are sinuous, soothing and hauntingly mysterious. Spacy blips and bleeps dart in and out of the songs, propelling the music toward the vague essence of a future dotted with references to orbits and rockets, the speed of light, and other bleak, spaced-out elements.

Tracks like sultry opener “Alive”, soul-stirring affirmation “Make Believe”, “Cherries In The Snow”, the writhing "Mouth To Mouth" and dreamy "Life On A Distant Star" find Vanessa as seductive and rapturous as ever but with a new found confidence and a commanding sense of self and purpose.

Other cuts like “Peculiar”, "How Far”, the shimmery title track and “Zero G” glide and swell with echoey, panting sounds looped into the background rhythms with effects incorporating elements of drum’n’bass and house with equal ease and agility.

The result is a stimulating and expansive exploration with depth, distance and intimacy that’s equally at home on the dancefloor, in the car, or in the comforts of a bedroom.
